Teicoplanin (Targocid) is a glycopeptide antibiotic that has bactericidal activity against aerobic and anaerobic Gram-positive bacteria including multi-resistant staphylococci. Measurement of plasma/serum teicoplanin is useful to optimise parenteral treatment in severe sepsis or burns, deep-seated staphylococcal infection (including bone and joint infection), endocarditis and in intravenous drug abusers.

In bone and joint infections, teicoplanin concentrations should be between 20-40 mg/L, but <60 mg/L. In complicated skin and soft tissue infections, teicoplanin concentrations should be between 15-30 mg/L, but <60 mg/L
