Information to patients and users regarding UKAS Accreditation
The implementation of quality management and its tools and techniques are essential not only to deliver quality improvements but also to comply with the many accreditation/licensing bodies that examine the pathology laboratory. These bodies ensure that pathology laboratories achieve set minimum quality standards and encourage best practice within the organisation.
Southwest Pathology Services currently use an electronic quality management system called Q-Pulse (provided by Ideagen) – this system encompasses a number of aspects:
- Controlling documentation
- Managing audits
- Analysis of Incident, complaints and risks
- Management of training, competency and personal development
- Identifying continuous improvement
- Service review
- Asset Management
Southwest Pathology Services is a UKAS accredited medical laboratory No. 9679

SPS ISO 15189:2022 UKAS Accreditation Certificate
Please Note: Where possible we will accredit all testing performed by SPS but there are certain tests, where this is not possible due to e.g. Inability to establish metrological traceability of the calibrators to an international standard or where the test is required for clinical utility but there are no CE/UKCA marked or manufacturers established methods available
Current Unaccredited Testing/Processes Performed by SPS (2025)
Blood Sciences – Cryoglobulins, PFA.
Diagnostic Cytology – Crystals
Digital Histopathology Reporting (Currently awaiting a UKAS extension to scope) and Thyroglobulin Immunohistochemistry
Haemoglobinopathy Screen to determine HbA2, HbF and HbS levels and the presence of abnormal haemoglobins
The laboratory is constantly making changes to its testing repertoire, testing methods and equipment used; Due to clinical demand, manufacturers changing the methods/kits that they provide and equipment refresh. When these changes occur the laboratory performs an extensive verification and change control process before these tests are used to provide patients results, but the process of re-accreditation can take months to achieve, hence they may remain out of scope for our ISO15189 accreditation for a period. This does not mean that these tests do not meet the required standards or are unsafe.
