Living our purpose

Our purpose is to make a positive difference to lives, health and wellbeing through science, innovation and high-quality diagnostics.

One of the ways in which we achieve this is by being a sustainable organisation, acting to minimise our impact on the environment and working in the interests of the wide range of communities we serve.

Lab floor

As part of a global organisation, SYNLAB UK&I are able to leverage the combined knowledge and expertise of hundreds of laboratories to identify and share ideas and innovation to enable us to achieve our shared sustainability goals.

SYNLAB reports annually on progress and key Environmental, Socal and Governance (ESG) metrics, covering all SYNLAB countries including the UK. The latest version is accessible here.

We live our purpose through our three pillars – SYNLAB Green, Care and Citizenship – which guide us to deliver our sustainability goals.

SYNLAB Green

We want to reduce the environmental impact of the services we deliver and always strive to protect the environment. We will do this by achieving Net-Zero by 2045 (see our Carbon Reduction Plan here), We aim to reduce clinical waste, encourage greener transport options, use carbon neutral energy sources, reduce energy usage in our buildings and equipment, measure and reduce waste, and progress towards ISO14001 (the environmental management standard).

SYNLAB Care

We provide innovative, high-quality diagnostics to the communities we work in. We focus on access to excellent healthcare, employee empowerment and wellbeing, community impact, and diversity and inclusion. We have set targets for promoting research and innovation, and supporting staff development.

SYNLAB Citizenship

We are committed to the highest standards of ethical business practice and want to advance public health through responsible corporate citizenship. We do this by addressing public health risks and ensuring data privacy through cybersecurity. We undertake annual risk assessments to help assure responsible supply chain management.

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI)

By putting people at the heart of what we do, we are prioritising the creation of an environment where colleagues can thrive by feeling included, engaged and empowered to contribute. We are committed to investing in people and helping them grow, as we aim to shape the next generation of healthcare scientists.

Our purpose, vision and values are key to uniting our colleagues across many locations and services. However, we recognise there are huge benefits of being able to draw upon a variety of lived experiences, views and approaches to recognise and celebrate the many unique and rich characteristics of our colleagues, customers, partners and the communities we serve.

Our DEI strategy

We aim to create an inclusive workplace where everyone can belong, develop, thrive and collaborate. We value and seek diversity to enhance our approaches to innovation and excellence. We apply equity in how we support our people, enabling them to fulfil their potential and develop their careers, and how we work with the communities we serve to improve their quality of life and wellbeing.

Our DEI strategy is focused on the 9 Pillars of Inclusion:

  • Age and Generation
  • Sex and Gender
  • Disability and Neurodiversity
  • Mental Health
  • Parenthood
  • Race, Ethnicity and Nationality
  • Religion and Beliefs
  • Sexual Orientation
  • Socioeconomic Background

Employer’s Network for Equality and Inclusion membership

We are a member of the Employer’s Network for Equality and Inclusion (enei) and take part each year in an assessment of our DEI work, the TIDE Benchmark.
