Description

HLA typing can assist in resolving differential diagnosis of HLA associated disorders. A variety of methods and technologies are used, including Next Generation Sequencing (NGS), PCR-SSP and PCR-SSOP (Luminex) to determine HLA Class I (HLA-A, B, C) and/or HLA Class II (DRB1/3/4/5, DQB, DQA, DPB, DPA) alleles. The method of testing and the locus of HLA tested will depend on the disease under investigation and the clinical details provided.

Clinical details

The associations between HLA genes with a variety of autoimmune and inflammatory diseases are well established, even where the actual disease susceptibility genes or the mechanism that confers the disease often remain to be elucidated. Knowledge of a patients HLA type can assist in confirming or discounting a diagnosis.
