Anti-phospholipid syndrome (APS), also known as Hughes syndrome presents classically with thrombosis in major arteries and veins, myocardial, pulmonary and cerebral infarction in the young and recurrent miscarriage. APS is characterized by the presence of autoantibodies to a variety of phospholipid molecules, among which is cardiolipin. The detection of anti-cardiolipin antibodies (ACA) is a major part of the laboratory investigation of APS and of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) where up to 50% of patients have these autoantibodies. Both IgG and IgM autoantibodies are of clinical relevance and our anti-cardiolipin assay tests for both antibodies.
