Beta-2 Microglobulin

- The measurement of beta-2 microglobulin is used as prognostic indicator in myeloma. Concentrations will also be raised in patients with renal dysfunction.
- Clinical details
Beta-2 microglobulin is a low molecular weight protein (11-12 kDa) found on the surface of all human cells as a component polypeptide chain of the HLA antigen complex. It is found in most body fluids and can be measured in serum, CSF, saliva, joint fluids and urine. The protein is excreted through the renal glomerulus, the majority being reabsorbed in the proximal tubules.
