Clinical details
Vitamin K1 2,3-epoxide is the bi-product of vitamin K1 formed when vitamin K is used as a cofactor in protein modification. Normally vitamin K epoxide is rapidly recycled by the enzyme vitamin K epoxide reductase (VKOR) and is not normally detectable in blood. If the action of the VKOR enzyme is blocked by vitamin K antagonist type anticoagulants such as warfarin or rodenticide superwarfarins vitamin K1 2,3-epoxide accumulates and becomes detectable in the blood.

Patient description
Vitamin K1 2,3-epoxide is the bi-product of vitamin K1 formed when vitamin K is used as a cofactor in protein modification. Normally vitamin K epoxide is rapidly recycled by the enzyme vitamin K epoxide reductase (VKOR) and is not normally detectable in blood. If the action of the VKOR enzyme is blocked by vitamin K antagonist type anticoagulants such as warfarin or rodenticide superwarfarins vitamin K1 2,3-epoxide accumulates and becomes detectable in the blood. Vitamin K1 2,3- epoxide is measured by reversed phase HPLC with post column in-line chemical reduction and fluorescence detection.
