A unified pathology network
Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust has commissioned SYNLAB Essex to bring together its two existing services into a single pathology service for the area.
We will do this by transitioning to a hub-and-spoke pathology services model over an 18+ month period. This means most routine and specialist tests will be carried out in high-capacity state of the art laboratories (the hubs), while modernised laboratories at each hospital (the spokes) will focus on urgent and inpatient care.
The hub-and-spoke model has been clinically proven to help speed up test results, free up space in hospitals for other services, and offer new opportunities for staff training and innovation. It also aims to future-proof the service to better meet the needs of the area’s growing population.

- Future proofing diagnostic services
- Creating state-of-the-art, purpose built laboratories
- Utilising latest technology to improve capability, quality and efficiency
- Aligning 20+ phlebotomy clinics and teams to improve service consistency
- Releasing 1,412m2 of hospital estate to other NHS services
