Payroll and HR Systems Specialist (Maternity Cover)

  • Salary: £35,000 to £45,000 per annum

We are looking for a Payroll and HR Systems Specialist to join our team and support our Head of HR Solutions in managing shared HR and payroll systems across multiple SYNLAB businesses in the UK.  This role is essential in ensuring the efficient delivery of payroll services and maintaining accurate HR records. It will be home-based with frequent travels to our offices in London and other areas.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with the Head of HR Solutions to oversee SYNLAB’s managed service payroll system.
  • Process and review payroll tasks, ensuring accuracy and compliance with regulations.
  • Handle BACS payments and liaise with external providers.
  • Assist with HMRC submissions and other regulatory requirements.
  • Provide guidance and support to internal HR and Finance teams on payroll matters.
  • Manage and maintain the payroll system (MHR/iTrent).
  • Administer company pension schemes and provide information to new starters.
  • Serve as the UK system expert for our global HR Information System (Oracle Cloud system, SYNLAB Compass).
  • Support other HR processes and benefits administration.
  • Assist in implementing changes and improvements to HR and payroll practices.



  • Experience managing high-volume, time-critical payroll administration.
  • Payroll/CIPP qualification.
  • Strong understanding of payroll legislation and tax regulations.
  • Proficiency in IT applications, including Excel.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong analytical and numerical abilities.
  • Exceptional organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to build relationships and simplify complex processes.


  • Knowledge of NHS/Agenda for Change terms and conditions and the NHS Pension scheme.
  • Experience with iTrent/MHR software.
  • Project delivery experience.
  • Familiarity with PowerBI or Business Analysis Certification.
  • Experience in multi-site operations.
